The Maori

The Maori are a very proud people, with an illustrious history. They are the original inhabitants of Aotearoa, New Zealand. Their roots can be traced back to the Polynesians, and they share similar languages with their surrounding neighbors. They had to be excellent navigators, because in order to settle on New Zealand, they had to traverse the ocean by way of canoe.

Many of you may have heard of the Maori, they play an intricate role in the New Zealand cultural scene. One popular example of the Maori culture are the tattoos they wear. They are often refereed to as tribal tattoos. Getting an authentic Maori tattoo is a rite of passage in its self. Another popular example of the Maori today is their “Haka” war dance. The New Zealand rugby team starts off every game by performing this traditional war dance, intended to intimidate their opponents.

The Maori culture has survived for many years, and is now engraved in New Zealand culture. This semester I plan to explore this culture, and discover what makes them unique. Some aspects of the culture have been revived in recent years, such as the language. This provides for a promising cultural exploration.

  1. Great detail with first blog post. Think about how you can organize this around a central definition/concept. This will be key especially for the second blog. My only concern moving forward is your plan of study. Will you be able to conduct interview and observations? This is necessary for the project.
